Application SubType Definitions

Requests related to work within the MBTA’s Zone of Influence, typically within 30 feet of the MBTA’s property line. The work performed takes place entirely on the applicant’s property, the MBTA is reviewing the planned work activities to confirm they do not interfere with MBTA train and transit operations. The purpose is to ensure that proposed work in close proximity to MBTA property does not pose any risks or disruptions to the MBTA’s operations, infrastructure, or safety standards.

Use of crane(s) within the MBTA’s Zone of Influence, particularly those positioned over or adjacent to MBTA property, tracks, or infrastructure such as tunnels. The purpose is to ensure that the operation of cranes near MBTA tracks and facilities is conducted safely and in a manner that does not pose any risks or disruptions to MBTA operations.

Explanation of Fees Due

Administrative Fee – $1,000 to be submitted with application

License Fee – Minimum annual fee of $1,000 for standard licenses and $5000 for telecommunication and utility licenses. To be paid at the time of license execution.

Design and Construction Review Fee – This fee is not required for all applications. If you are required to pay this fee you will be contacted by the Director of Licensing – $1,600 + Design Review Fee (to be determined by MBTA)

Space Requirements

Please upload a site plan that outlines the requirements for the size and configuration of the proposed license area. Plans submitted to the MBTA for review must show all property lines, structures, and the MBTA Zone of Influence (ZOI). Your plan must clearly indicate both the limits of the MBTA right-of-way (ROW) and the distance from the tracks, as well as any improvements therein. An example is shown below.
