Subway Performers Program

The MBTA allows musical performers at designated Performance Areas throughout the subway system on a daily basis.

Subway Performers are required to obtain a permit and carry a badge identifying them as a licensed Performer. Approved locations for performances are identified by signage. Performances in other areas are not permitted.

To obtain a new permit and badge, or to renew a permit and badge, you will need to provide:

  • A completed Subway Performer Permit & MBTA Access Privilege Application
  • Two (2) forms of positive identification: a Government issued ID (e.g., passport, driver’s license, military ID) with a recent photo and one other form of ID. PLEASE NOTE: If you are not a US Citizen you must show proof of legal residency or visitor status with either a Visa or Green Card
  • One (1) piece of mail with your current address and a post-mark date within the last 30 days.
  • A Money Order for $25.00 made payable to MBTA. Cash, personal checks, credit cards, and Paypal will not be accepted.
Helpful Hint: Not sure where to get a money order? You can get money orders at the US Post office, most convenient stores, grocery stores, some retail stores, and most financial institutions such as a bank or credit union. Fees will vary but if you are a member (i.e. account holder at a credit union), you may get discounted fees.

When you have all the requirements above please make an appointment to deliver your paperwork and have your picture taken for an ID badge. Appointments are available Monday-Friday between 9:00am–3:00pm. If approved, your permit and ID will be mailed within 10–14 days.
